The SpectraLink NetLink e340 and NetLink i640 Wireless Telephones are mobile IP handsets that are supported by the 3300 ICP system. These handsets operate over an 802.11b wireless Ethernet LAN and provide users with wireless voice over IP (VoIP) extensions. These handsets integrate with the 3300 ICP system giving users the ability to roam the workplace while providing many of the features available from an IP desk telephone.
The NetLink e340 and NetLink i640 Wireless Telephones reside on the wireless LAN and communicate with other wireless devices using Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) radio technology. The handset radio transmits and receives packets at speeds up to 11 Mbps. The handsets support Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) as defined by the 802.11b specification. The handsets are available with 40-bit or 128-bit encryption. WEP increases the security of the wireless LAN to a level similar to that of a wired Ethernet LAN.
Notes:
Since the SpectraLink i640 Wireless Telephone system uses IP multicast addresses, you must enable multicasting on the subnet that is used for the NetLink Wireless Telephones, NetLink SpectraLink Voice Priority (SVP) Server, and Telephone Gateways.
Routers are typically configured with filters to prevent multicast traffic from flowing outside of specific domains. The wireless LAN can be placed on a separate VLAN or subnet to reduce the effects of broadcast and multicast traffic from devices in other network segments.
The following diagram shows the SpectraLink components in a network with the 3300 ICP, access points, and a LAN Ethernet Switched Hub.
