Line Quality Measurement

Purpose:

Use this form to perform line quality measurements on Loop Start (LS) trunks that are connected to the AX controller, Analog Main Board, Analog Option Board, or ASU II.

Any new test conducted on a trunk overwrites the previous results with the latest results, however, the test results are also stored as maintenance logs. After you use the Line Measure Tool on a line, the columns in the form are updated with the results.

Use this form when performing the following tasks:

Conditions

Before you can run line measurement tests, you must configure the system to support the tests. See Measuring LS Trunk Line Settings for instructions.

Displays the status, date and time of the test that is selected in the bottom frame (see below for definitions of these fields).

Test Type:

Displays the type of test performed:

Individual Line Quality Test - Reports the loss level, Echo Return Loss (ERL), and line quality for a specified trunk.

Batch Line Quality Test - Reports the loss level, Echo Return Loss (ERL), and line quality for all applicable trunks in the system.

Individual Distortion/Echo Test - Measures non-linear distortion (for example, from clipping) of a specified LS trunk for each candidate balance circuit setting.

Batch Distortion/Echo Test - Measures non-linear distortion (for example, from clipping) of all applicable LS trunks in the system  for each candidate balance circuit setting.

Line Measure Tool Report Data

Date

Month/day/year of the test

Time

Hours:minutes:seconds of the test

PLID

Physical location identifier of circuit that the test applies to.

Recommended Setting

If the test is successful, the following information is provided:

  • recommended balance network setting. Use the coefficient index information to program the Balance Network Setting in the Analog Trunks form

  • loss level of the line and the correct setting. Use the test result to program the Trunk Category (Long or Short) in the Analog Trunks form.

If you have enabled the Automatic Setting option  in the Analog Trunks form of the trunk, these settings are automatically applied to the specified trunk circuits.

Status

An assessment of the overall quality of the line (GREEN, YELLOW, RED).

  • GREEN indicates low possibility of echo on the line

  • YELLOW indicates possibility of echo is moderate

  • RED indicates high  possibility of echo. If a line is assessed a RED rating, contact the local CO and request a line change.

Other

If the test fails, an error message is displayed in this field. See Interpreting_Error_Messages.

ERL

Minimum Echo Return Loss (ERL) measured on the line.
