Emergency Services - CESID Maintenance

CAUTION: The system administrator must maintain up-to-date CESID programming. Outdated CESID information can have serious consequences if it results in emergency personnel being directed to the wrong location.

Automatic CESID updating applies to IP device DNs only, while the system administrator must manually update CESIDs associated with analog and digital DNs.

Because analog and digital DNs are programmed to a circuit and not a set, analog and digital sets may be switched or moved without affecting the DN. In order to move a DN, the system administrator must change system programming to assign the DN to another circuit. Part of this programming includes assigning the CESID associated with the new location. See the CESID Assignment form.

IP device DNs are programmed to the set. An IP phone can be moved to another location on the network and still rehome to its host ICP and register for service. If care is not taken to maintain DN programming, CESID programming may become outdated.

Automatic CESID Updating

The system uses the Device Connectivity forms (Device Connectivity - All and Device Connectivity - Moved) and the L2 to CESID Mapping table to automatically update CESID information in the CESID Assignment form. The system administrator can assign CESIDs to DNs in the CESID Assignment form or to L2 connectivity points in the L2 to CESID Mapping table. When Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) or Spanning Tree protocol (STP) is enabled uniformly across the network, the CESID Assignment information is updated in real time. The system uses the Device Connectivity forms to synchronize the information in the CESID Assignment form and the L2 to CESID Mapping table.

CESID Alarms

A CESID Alarm is raised when the system identifies a DN with a missing CESID. This typically occurs when a device moves to an unknown location. CESID Alarms are raised only for IP devices that are configured to have their CESID updated automatically and do not apply to non-IP devices or to devices that have their CESID updating set to manual.

Examine the CESID logs and alarms to determine any missing or mismatched CESID after a device move occurs. Assign any missing CESIDs in the CESID Assignment form or in the L2 to CESID Mapping table (see Assign a Missing CESID). The system keeps track of the number of updated CESIDs, updates the CESID alarms accordingly, and clears each CESID alarm once all applicable CESIDs have been properly assigned or updated.

Assign a Missing CESID

To assign a missing CESID

  1. (Optional) Examine the CESID Logs to identify the CESID problem.

  2. In the CESID Assignment form, assign missing CESID(s).

  3. In the L2 to CESID Mapping form, assign missing CESID(s).

Troubleshooting

When moving users by issuing the MOVE RENUMBER or MOVE SWAP maintenance commands, the CESID remains associated with the Location ID of the telephone set rather than with the directory number or users themselves.
