ONS voice mail functionality provides call identity on calls rerouted from internal extensions. Also, messages sent from the voice mail system are considered Callback messages to the voice mail hunt group identifying origin to display sets.
Message waiting indications activated from an ONS voice mail port with COS option ONS/COV/E&M Voice Mail Port enabled can only be deactivated from a system port with this option enabled. These are Callback type messages.
Message waiting indications activated from an ONS voice mail port with COS option ONS/COV/E&M Voice Mail Port disabled can only be deactivated from a system port with this option disabled. These are Dialed message waiting type messages.
Callback and Dialed message waiting indications are retained after a reload or restart.
Callback messages from voice mail can only be activated from voice mail ports within a "voice mail" type hunt group; otherwise messages activated will be considered Dialed message waiting (lamp only).
Callback messages can only be deactivated from a member of the "voice mail" type hunt group that activated the message.
Callback messages can not be activated from more than one "voice mail" type hunt group.
Voice mail ports within a "voice mail" type hunt group may be dedicated to message activation/deactivation by assigning and applying a separate Class of Service option for these ports.
Class of Service option ONS/COV/E&M Voice Mail Port must be enabled for members of a "voice mail" type hunt group.
Most voice processors require return dial tone for confirmation on dialed messages set. The voice mail system may be programmed to end the dial sequence with a "#" tone for "end of dial", if conflict dialing is present. Return dial tone is received immediately, allowing the voice processor to set multiple message indications without going on-hook and voice mail response time is much quicker. Also, the subscriber's conflict dialing timer could be reduced in Class of Service.
Class of service option Message Deactivate on Off-hook does not cancel the message indication sent from ONS ports with COV/ONS/E&M Voice Mail Port enabled.
Attendant consoles are unable to receive a message waiting indication.
Single line sets without message waiting lamps require Message Waiting Audible Tone Notification COS option enabled.
Subscribers with several voice messages in their mailbox will only have one Callback or Dialed message waiting applied to their set.
Voice mail ports may be assigned to multiple voice mail hunt groups.
To program an ONS voice mail port:
Designate an ONS/OPS Circuit Descriptors form for the ONS voice mail ports and determine minimum/maximum flash timers (default 200/700 ms).
Assign directory numbers to the ONS voice mail ports in the Analog Sets form and apply the relevant circuit descriptor number.
Create the ONS voice mail hunt group pilot number in the Hunt Groups form. Make the hunt mode "Circular". Program the group type as "voice mail".
Enter the hunt group members with the COS option ONS/COV/E&M Voice Mail Port enabled.
Program the following Class of Service options for the ONS voice mail ports:
Busy Override Security: Yes
Call Forwarding Accept: Yes
Camp-on Tone Security/FAX Machine: Yes
ONS/COV/E&M Voice Mail Port: Yes
Dialed Night Service: Yes (optional)
Do Not Disturb Permanent: No (optional)
Message Waiting: Yes
No Answer Recall Timer (0-45 s): 17 (default)
Dialing Conflict Timer (2-5 s): 2 (optional)
Program the Station Attributes form to apply the relevant Class of Service (COS) number to the ONS voice mail ports. Toll fraud should be considered when assigning a COR to the voice mail ports. External dialing may be required for pager notification or message forwarding.
Assign message waiting activate and deactivate codes in the Feature Access Codes form. Optionally, assign access codes to Dialed Day/Night Service Inquire and message waiting inquire if used by the voice processor.
Program the following Class of Service options for the subscriber extensions:
Call Forwarding (Internal Destination): Yes
Message Waiting Audible Tone Notification: Yes (optional)
Multiline Set Voice Mail Callback Message Erasure Allowed: No (optional)
Call Forward No Answer Timer (0-125 s): 15 (default)
Subscribers single line phones equipped with a message lamp require an ONS/OPS Circuit Descriptors form referenced from the Analog Sets form with the Message Waiting Lamp enabled.
Subscribers will call forward to the ONS voice mail hunt group pilot number.
System call rerouting may also be used. Simply reroute extensions to the ONS voice mail hunt group pilot number.
Telephone Answering
Calls rerouted to ONS voice mail ports are handled by the voice processor dependant on the tones received. Using the COS option ONS/COV/E&M Voice Mail Port the system will pause for one second after the voice mail port answers and tone in the subscriber's extension number. The voice processor then plays the proper personal greeting for message taking.
Message Waiting
Message waiting indications can be set from the ONS voice processor circuits by dialing the message waiting activate/deactivate feature access codes assigned on the system followed by the subscriber's extension number.
Message Retrieval
Subscribers call the voice mail hunt group number directly to retrieve their messages. The voice processor is unable to identify the subscriber, requiring the user to enter the appropriate tones once voice mail has answered.
Display sets may "read" and "call" messages if activated from an ONS "voice mail" type hunt group.
Messages can be retrieved external to the system dependent on incoming trunk access to the voice processor. Usually, subscribers will have to manually enter one or two digits followed by their mailbox number to log into their mailbox.
If the voice mail has to dedicate ports for message sending, interconnect restrictions with intercept handling to the voice mail hunt group pilot number can be applied to the messaging ports.
Auto Attendant
Voice processors can perform auto attendant functions using ONS call transfer functionality. This is performed by a switchhook flash on the ONS port. Incoming trunks may be directed to the voice mail hunt group pilot number, allowing users to transfer to valid destinations through the system. Because most subscriber extensions will be call rerouted busy/no answer to voice mail, program the voice processor to perform an unscreened transfer to provide the most efficient use of the voice mail ports.
