SDS - Start Sharing with a New Element

After you have set up a data-sharing network or cluster, you can add new elements to the network or cluster at any time. Once you have added new elements, you can start sharing with the new elements, if desired.

When you add a new element, you must always bring it into an existing data sharing community from an element that is already in the data sharing community (that is, you must always grow the data sharing community from an element within the SDS network). The following illustrations illustrate this requirement:

There are three possible scenarios for starting to share with a new element:

Start Sharing with a New Element at the Network Level

You may wish to start sharing data with an element that is new to the local data-sharing network.

To start sharing with a new element

  1. Ensure that the element has been upgraded to Release 6.0 or later. If it is not upgraded to Release 6.0 or later, see Upgrading Elements for Data-Sharing.

  2. Ensure that the element is not currently a member of any other data-sharing network. An element can only be a member of one data-sharing network at a time. If the element is sharing data with another network, remove the element from that network. See Removing an Element for more information.

  3. Log into an element that is within the existing data sharing community (an element that is already part of the SDS network). From the Network Elements form, add the new element to the local SDS network. See Defining the Network Elements for more information.

  4. Start sharing. See Sharing Data.

  5. Using the SDS Forms Comparison function, compare the forms of the local element to the forms of the new element. This step allows you to avoid performing unnecessary synchronizations. If the results of the SDS Forms Comparison indicate that

  6. the data is the same, then you don't need to perform a synchronization.

  7. there are only minor differences, then you can make the updates manually

  8. there are significant differences, synchronize the forms using SDS.

Start Sharing with a Network Element at a Cluster Level

You may wish to enable a network element to start sharing data within a cluster in the same network. The element is not new to the data-sharing network, but it is a new cluster member.

To start sharing at a cluster level

  1. Ensure that the element has been added to the cluster. If not, see Adding Cluster Elements for more information.

  2. Start sharing. See Sharing Data.

  3. Using the SDS Forms Comparison function to compare the forms of the local element to the forms of the new element. This step allows you to avoid performing unnecessary synchronizations. If the results of the SDS Forms Comparison indicate that

  4. the data is the same, then you don't need to perform a synchronization.

  5. there are only minor differences, then you can make the updates manually

  6. there are significant differences, synchronize the forms using SDS.
